Chair in Environmental Epidemiology

The creation of a new School of Health and Medicine is at the heart of Lancaster University’s strategic developments. The School brings together colleagues working in biomedical and life sciences, health research, and medicine, in a novel cross-disciplinary mix.

Applications are invited for an inaugural Chair in Environmental Epidemiology within Lancaster University’s recently established School of Health and Medicine. The newly formed School brings together three existing departments: the Institute for Health Research, the Biomedical and Life Sciences Unit and the Department of Medicine, with the objectives of maximising opportunities for growth in research and teaching, and providing a clear University focus for collaborations with the NHS and other national and international health agencies.

The successful applicant will be expected to provide leadership in research and postgraduate teaching of epidemiology, and will be invited to take part in the recruitment process for a currently available lectureship in epidemiology. Epidemiology within the School will be developed in close collaboration with CHICAS, whose focus is on the development and application of statistical/epidemiological methods, rather than on substantive epidemiology itself.

There are also clear opportunities for collaboration with other university departments. The Lancaster Environment Centre has research strengths in novel methods for monitoring and measuring environmental exposures, whilst the Department of Mathematics and Statistics includes a large and highly rated (RAE 5*) Statistics group. Postgraduate programmes provide further opportunities to collaborate with these two departments, both in the delivery of existing programmes and in the development of new postgraduate degree schemes.

For an informal discussion about the post, please contact Professor Peter Diggle, Professor of Statistics, Department of Medicine (tel +44 (0)1524 393957, email p.diggle@lancaster.ac.uk) or Professor Tony Gatrell, Dean-designate of the School of Health and Medicine (tel +44 (0)1524 510851, email a.gatrell@lancaster.ac.uk) or Professor Anne Garden, Head of Department of Medicine (tel +44 (0)1524 593383, email a.garden@lancaster.ac.uk).
